Ministry in Motion

Yesterday afternoon had to have been one of the nicest days of the year so far... and there I was, stuck in a meeting at the associational office. Yes, there was work to be done, a hispanic mission church to plant, discussion on the Hmong work, etc..., but there it was sunny, 80 degrees, birds chirping, flowers blooming, and me stuck inside.

Finally the meeting ended, yes, I am free to enjoy the day... I rush home, change clothes, grab a fishing pole, and tell Cayle it's "MAN TIME". Next thing you know we are on the creek, sloshing through the water, skipping rocks, and trying to sneak up on some unsuspecting fish.

We have our routine down pretty well by now; I cast it in (he casts OK, but we are fishing light weight this time and need a little more finesse), and he works the jigs back. 1st cast - BAM!- a nice little small-mouth; Calye landing it like a pro. NIce try, but we were really wanting to fill a stringer full of goggle eyes to take home instead. Next cast, BAM! - this time a nice sized goggle eye, got the stringer started. Good times! And so it goes like this for the next 30 minutes, Cayle & I just catching fish like crazy. We are finally getting a good stringer of keepers, at least 8 good fat one's, and Cayle decides that the fish are drying out, he needs to put them into the water so they can catch their breath.

One more cast, and then... "Dad, Dad, the stringer fell out of my hand, the fish are gone, get em, get em!" Oh no, it was a catastrophe, our stringer gone, Cayle is shocked that he had let them go & he is looking at me like "What are you going to do Dad, get mad, am I in trouble? Or is everything OK?"

I told him about a time when I was growing up in Virginia and my dad took me fishing... guess what, I dropped the stringer in the creek too. "Well I guess we are even then dad, you lost one stringer and I have lost one." Yep son, I guess that's so.
We went home with no fish last night. All I had to show for the afternoon was a little bit of sunburn on my balding head, wet shoes, hands that smelled fishy, and several uninteruppted hours just me and my 5 year old son!

Still, he could not believe that those fish got away... Me on the other hand, I was glad they did!

Thank God for days like this!
