Ministry in Motion
Despondent
I went out this morning, not expecting much to happen. It was raining, big storms were on the way in, I have not done very well anyway. I am talking about turkey season. So far this season I have gotten up at 4:45am all but 3 days (we are two weeks in), and I have not even seen a bird yet (It seems tougher this year). Admittedly discouraged, I almost slept in this morning but decided to go, just in case some bird out there wanted to gobble at the thunder.
I get there just before daybreak... set up in my first spot... nothing. Go to a second place to listen... nothing. Well, I will go one more place to check it out, I get there... start to call...(it starts sprinkling on me again, I am already soaked)... not 45 seconds after I call, a big old Tom gobbler comes running straight out of the woods right at me! The only problem is, I am not set up to hunt, my gun was slung over my shoulder and I am standing up next to a tree (ARGGGGHHHH!) Of course he sees me, turns and flys off, big old beard flapping as he takes flight.
I am shocked... every day for the last two weeks and nothing, then when I get my chance, I blow it because I am not ready. Standing there in shock, unsure if I want to cry or... nope I just wanted to cry (Non-Turkey hunters don't understand this), it kind of hit me.... "Well dummy you were standing there calling, what did you expect that bird to do?" and then I made the connection to church.
How many times have I just shown up and gone through the motions. Yeah, everything is in place but I am not really expecting God to do much, and then when He presents me with an opportunity, I am not ready! (ARGGGHHHH) Next time, both in the woods and in the church I am coming with both barrels locked and loaded!
