What does man gain from all his labor...? I really connected with the readings this morning. Face it, we live in a consumer driven, work to get ahead culture, yet what does all that work get for us? An ulcer, resentment from neglected loved ones, high blood pressure, stress, and in the end we all die anyway!
For me, it begs the question, if everything is meaningless, then why bother in the first place? Why be wise, when the fool will be just as remembered 50 years from now. Why strive to be rich, when Uncle Sam and spoiled kids will take it over when I die? 2:11 "Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind..."
How many of us are chasing the wind? Think about it... what in your life are you doing that will last?
Ecc. 12 concludes it very well when it reminds us that ultimately nothing on this world matters unless it is done for the Lord. v. 13 "Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man."
Remember Jesus summend up all the law and the commandments when he said to "Love God and Love others (paraphrase)." Our work will not last, but God sees our love for him and others and He is eternal!
